It is quite easy to photograph a single model.
There is basically one-on-one interaction between the photographer and the model.
As a matter of fact usually there is a third person in the studio doing whatever
chores and that actually tips the scale to the advantage of the photographer. Let us not
forget the presence of multiple lights that further distract the model and put the model in the definite disadvantage in this configuration.
When two models are photographed at the same time, this imbalance gets evened up. From my
experience, two models can easily make the photography session much more difficult to control.
The scene is more joyful and playful with two girls bouncing and joking with each other. One can easily feel that the models have much more fun and sense of security while posing together. Many photographers attempt to broaden their portfolios with the doubles. I personally find it much more difficult to photograph doubles as it reduces my opportunity to control the shoot.
From the viewer point of view, doubles are probable better and more desirable to view.
Three is better then two. It gets much harder to produce meaningful
image as now we have moved into the imagination zone. Tell me, where in real life one can find three nude girls
smiling and prancing joyfully? There are few places where it can take place
but the most common one is our imagination.
The joy of three models can not be under estimated as it removes us from reality and throws us into the world of dreams. Suddenly we leave our body and flow as if the gravity disappeared. Here comes one from the left but before we have
time to conceive what is happening the second one is already there on our right side demanding attention. From
below from our feet comes the third one with the high expectation of eye-to-eye contact. There is no choice but to loose
control and flow carelessly.
Four or more models photographed together is on the border of sick. Whenever I see this proof of injustice in the world, I get angry. It is me who deserves to be
there in between this great cluster of fun. I do not want to do anything bad but just jump
there in the middle and say – see I am here and you are not. There is absolutely nothing
one can do with so many models in one location but to shout to the world – I made it. I guess that is why those in high fashion like to photograph themselves in between bunch of nude subordinates.
